Where the Mountains Keep Their Oldest Secrets
A Province Still Quietly Its Own
Tucked against Vietnam’s northeastern border, Cao Bang is a UNESCO Global Geopark of limestone peaks, winding rivers, and valleys shaped over hundreds of millions of years, where time still moves at the pace of the seasons.
Tucked against Vietnam’s northeastern border with China, Cao Bang is a province of limestone peaks, winding rivers, and valleys where time moves at the pace of the seasons. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, its landscape has been shaped over hundreds of millions of years, while its highland communities, among them the Tay, Nung, and Dao, have preserved traditions that remain largely untouched by the pace of modern travel. This is a destination for those who prefer discovery to display, and who find meaning in places still quietly their own.
The province’s most celebrated spectacle is Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the largest transnational waterfalls in the world, where the Quay Son River cascades in broad, tiered curves across the border, framed by karst peaks and rice fields. Nearby, Nguom Ngao Cave reveals a vast underground world of stalactites and limestone chambers, while the shores of Thang Hen Lake, a cluster of tranquil lakes hidden among the mountains, offer a quieter counterpoint. At Pac Bo, the Karst Cave and its surroundings hold a place of deep significance in Vietnam’s modern history, and the winding Ma Phuc Pass rewards travellers with sweeping views over the highland landscape.
Cao Bang’s cuisine is as honest as its terrain. Banh Cuon Cao Bang, delicate rice rolls served with a rich, fragrant broth, is a local signature, while Vit Quay (roast duck) and Lon Cap Nach (native black pig) capture the flavours of the highlands. Beyond the table, the region invites slower experiences: a bamboo raft drifting beneath Ban Gioc at its most dramatic in the rainy season, a homestay in a Tay stilt house where evenings pass in conversation and warmth, and a visit in autumn, when the buckwheat flowers colour the valleys and the rice ripens to gold. In Cao Bang, the journey rewards those willing to arrive without haste.

Heritage Beside the Sea
Nha Trang’s heritage extends well beyond its beaches. The eighth-century Po Nagar Cham Towers recall the Champa Kingdom that once ruled this coastline, while the city’s identity as a fishing port endures at the table, in Bun Cha Ca made fresh each morning from the day’s catch, in grilled Nem Nuong, and in seafood hot pot brimming with lobster, crab, and shellfish.
